Mission Statement

At Klein Law, it is our hope that we are changing the stigma of the "uncaring lawyer," for we affirm that we are not only called to be "good lawyers” and "Officers of the Court," but are aware that people are entrusting themselves, their affairs and their lives to us.

Our competence arises out of our restricting our practice in the area of family law, which has been recognized not only by our colleagues within our profession, but by our clients and judiciary. Creating a good lawyer-client relationship is extremely important to us.

A good rapport with clients makes it easier for them to handle the emotional strain of family law issues and also produces better results. We want to be fair and "up front" with our fees and therefore, at the initial interview, each client reviews our Contract for Legal Services, which sets out our fees, costs to be incurred and defines our "legal" relationship in regards to our being officially retained.

Our role as lawyers is:

  • to advise the client how the law would apply to the case
  • to negotiate a settlement to the extent possible
  • to protect the rights of a client
  • to advocate where parties cannot settle

Clients deserve attention and that means:

  • returning phone calls in a timely fashion
  • copying all court and other documents and correspondence to clients
  • giving a realistic assessment of the case and that means not being overly optimistic to make clients feel better about their case and yet, not being overly pessimistic
  • providing financial accountability
  • listening and taking instructions from clients
  • not forcing clients into taking a position they don't want or can't live with
  • holding clients' information in strict confidence
  • using our BEST efforts at ALL times
  • treating all clients equally
  • being sensitive, for going through a marriage breakdown or fighting for the return of one's children is not easy!

Although our clients' interests are always paramount, we choose at all times to act in an ethical and fair manner in all dealings with "the other side." Although it is our client who gives us instructions as to the "ends" to achieve, it is the lawyer who decides how the case is "managed."

(With the exception of abuse cases), our practice is more "meditative" and "collaborative" rather than "litigious." What we mean is, we practice law in such a way as to promote "out-of-court" settlements, to the extent possible. However, that does not mean that we are not assertive in protecting our client's rights. On the other hand, if a client is "out for blood," we tell him/her that he/she is in the wrong place.

At Klein Law, the KEY is not JUST giving "good legal advice," but to "have a heart for people." Our desire is to build lasting relationships with our clients, through expert counsel and superior customer service. Finally ... we're not perfect! We are lawyers, but we are also people, trying to make a difference.

Marty Klein

Marty holds an LL.B. from the University of Ottawa Law School. Although he has restricted his practice to Family Law, throughout the years, he has also had a great deal of involvement in private adoptions, real estate, wills and powers of attorney. His Family Law involvement has included Children's Lawyer work, child support enforcement, child protection advocacy, mediation, including attendances in all levels of Courts in Ontario. With his appointment, in 2004, as a Deputy Judge in the Small Claims Court, Marty has come to appreciate that being a Judge is more than just a “vocation.” He firmly believes that being a Judge has a “calling,” placed upon it, in upholding the law and in seeing that justice is done. Marty has also been a Licensee to place children for adoption in Ontario since 1987. He is a member of the Family Lawyers Association and Peel Law Association. He is a member of the Ontario Court (Family) Bench & Bar Committee at Brampton and past chair of the Operations Committee, Toronto Family Court and taught for many years at the Bar Admission Course. Marty has a keen passion in mentoring new lawyers and in the area of "civility." How these two are integrated is his desire to see “quality” lawyers in the profession and their being "civil" to one another; something which is lacking in the legal profession. It's Marty's hope that throughout the years, he has been a good role model of practicing with integrity, to the lawyers in this firm and his colleagues throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

Marty has received extensive training in alternate dispute resolution, including mediation, arbitration and the collaborative process. Marty realizes the tremendous value in "interest based," "no-court resolution" to disputes. Marty is a member of ADR Institute of Ontario and the Peel Halton Collaborative Practice Group of Halton & Peel.
